Kolad gets sold as a rafting destination. That's accurate as far as it goes, but it's also like describing Mumbai as a city with a good airport. It is true, but it is not the whole picture.
The Kundalika river and the 22 acres of property that Nature Trails sits on support a range of activities that most people who come here for the rafting don't know exist until they arrive. Some of them are on the water. Some are above it. Some put you between two riverbanks with nothing but a rope and your own decision to keep going. All of them are better in person than they read on a listing page.
This is what Kundalika rafting actually looks like across a full day at Nature Trails Kundalika.
Kundalika River Rafting: What to Expect
The Kundalika runs on releases from the Bhira Dam. That's the important detail that separates this from most rafting rivers near Mumbai and Pune. It doesn't depend on the monsoon. It runs consistently year round, which means you can plan around it without checking a weather forecast for the past week and hoping for the best.
The stretch from the dam release point to the camp covers 13 kilometres of Grade II and III rapids. Grade II and III is the classification that means it's genuinely exciting, rapidsthat require actual paddling and make real noise, without being the kind of thing that requires a week of training or makes a family with teenagers hesitate. First timers do this every weekend. So do groups who have done it before and came back for it.
Sessions start at 8:30 AM. Be at the start point by 8. The two hours on the river go faster than you expect, and by the end of the stretch when the water calms and the guide lets the raft drift, jumping into the Kundalika is the natural ending to that particular morning.
When to Go for Kundalika Rafting
The issue of when to take a trip to Kundalika Rafting is often asked. The Kundalika is controlled by dams and the rafting trip isn't dependent on rain. This enables you to plan a rafting adventure outside of the monsoon season.
To ensure the best experience, consider reviewing the schedule for rafting and the river's conditions prior to visiting. Morning sessions are particularly useful since they allow you to use the remainder of the day to do other activities, meals and time by the river.
The question of whether you should take a rafting trip in the morning or afternoon is a frequent topic. Morning is the best time to go. Dam releases happen more constant in the morning, and the sun hasn't changed to a thing you have to control and returning to camp at noon with the afternoon to enjoy is much superior to doing it in the opposite direction.
What to Do After Rafting at Kundalika
The rafting experience at Kundalika isn't required to be the final part of your adventure. The gentler stretches of river allow kayaking for those who prefer water activities without the raging waters.
The kayaking experience at Kundalika is done on calmer areas of the river inside the property. It's a completely different experience, less noisy and more reliant on the gear you're putting in, better if you've not tried it before as the improvements happen quickly and you can feel it.
For those who prefer the rapids while others prefer not to, kayaking option is the best choice for the second type of group. It's still located on the Kundalika it's exactly the same water, with having a different relationship to it. The instructors here view the subject as a technique to teach, not being a thing to monitor that can make an impact on how you end the class with the feeling that you've have learned something or just were soaked.
Beyond the River: Adventure Activities at Kundalika
The Kundalika program is based around the river, but it doesn't stop there. The activities that do not require water usually are those that fill in the gap in your day to keep the energy flowing between water sessions or offer those who have had enough of the river at the end of the day, something to do.
The land activities include:
- Burma Bridge & Valley Crossing
- Rappelling
- The Tarzan Swing
- Nature Treks in the forest of riverine
- Treasure Hunts (Highly recommended for those in competitive groups)
The treasure hunt appears in more reviews than you think. People who have participated have said it altered the mood of the day, and created a the element of competition which ran across the other activities, and provided people with an opportunity to discuss over the campfire.
Zip-Lining Over the River: The Five-Second Thrill
The zip-line at Nature Trails Kundalika goes over the river. That detail changes what it is. You're not sailing over a clearing or a hillside. You're above the Kundalika with the water below and the Sahyadri on both sides. The combination of height and the river underneath produces a specific kind of moment that people describe as the most memorable five seconds of the trip, which is saying something given what else happens during a Kolad day.
It's available as part of the broader activity program rather than as a standalone booking. Do it before the rafting if your group is doing both in one day. The order matters for energy levels and for the mental experience of the day building rather than declining.
Riverside Campfires: Closing the Day Properly
By evening the Kundalika is doing a different thing. The activity energy has settled, people are hungry in the good kind of way, and the river at night with a fire on the bank is one of those combinations that does not require any embellishment.
The bonfire at Nature Trails Kundalika is on the riverbank.Maharashtrian food, the river sounds, whatever the day produced in terms of shared experience still in the air. Most groups that come for the water sports and stay overnight say the campfire is the part they talk about most afterward. Which makes sense. The activities are what you did. The campfire is where you processed what you did. Both matter.
Where to Stay for Kundalika Rafting
Staying close to the river makes it easier to build the rafting session into a complete Kolad getaway rather than treating it as a standalone activity.
Nature Trails Kundalika offers premium AC tents, super deluxe AC tents and river view cabin rooms. The accommodation gives groups different options depending on how they want to experience the stay, while keeping the river and activities at the centre of the trip.
For people travelling from Mumbai or Pune, staying overnight also means there is no need to rush through the rafting experience and immediately start the journey home. You can arrive, settle in, spend time around the property, raft the following morning and finish the trip with a meal before heading back.
