Kolad has a specific reputation. Everyone who has been says it is worth it. Everyone who hasn't asks whether it is really just a muddy field with some tents and overpriced Maggi. Both things are partly true depending entirely on where you book.
Camping in Kolad ranges from genuinely good to genuinely rough, and the difference between the two is not always obvious from a listing page. The photos look similar. The words are identical. "Riverside camping," "bonfire included," "adventure activities." The version that delivers on those words and the version that does not look almost the same until you arrive.
Nature Trails Kundalika is the version that delivers.
What Actually Makes Kundalika Different
The camp sits directly on the Kundalika river. Not near the river. Not a ten minute walk from the river. On it. The water is audible from the tents. The rafting launch point is on the property. When the camp says riverside, it means the river is the reason the camp exists where it does, not a marketing detail about a stream forty meters away.
The property covers 22 acres. The tents are premium AC tents and super deluxe AC tents, proper interiors, climate controlled, clean, with actual beds rather than the camping-as-suffering version of a sleeping bag on a mat. There are also river view cabin rooms if someone in the group wants walls. The accommodation does not require people to suffer to prove they went camping. It requires people to choose how outdoorsy they actually want to get, which is a more honest version of the same question.
This matters for groups specifically. In any group of people planning a Kolad camping trip there is always at least one person who agreed to come but was quietly worried about where they were going to sleep. Having comfortable accommodation options resolves that concern before it becomes a problem on arrival, while the river, rafting, activities and bonfire still keep the focus on the campingexperience.
Kundalika River Rafting: What to Expect
The Kundalika is dam controlled. That means it runs year round on releases from the Bhira Dam rather than depending on whether it rained last week. Grade II and III rapids, 13 kilometres from the release point to the camp. Real rapids, the kind that make noise and require actual paddling, not so intense that a first timer or a family with older kids should feel worried, intense enough that everyone in the raft is making noise by the third rapid.
Rafting starts at 8:30 AM. Arrive at the start point by 8 AM. The session takes about two hours. By the end of the stretch the river calms, guides let people float or jump in, and the water in the Kundalika is cold enough that getting in feels like an actual reward rather than a polite gesture.
The question of whether to raft in the morning or the afternoon comes up a lot. Morning is the answer. The dam releases are most consistent then, the sun hasn't turned the air into something you need to manage around, and getting back to camp by noon with a full afternoon still available is significantly better than doing it the other way.
Evenings at Camp: Riverside Bonfires and Maharashtrian Food
This is where camping in Kolad either works or doesn't, and it's the part that photographs the least accurately.
At Nature Trails Kundalika the bonfire is on the riverbank. Not a firepit between parking spaces, on the actual bank of the Kundalika with the river moving past in the dark. The sound of the water, the fire, the Sahyadri sky away from any city light. People who have done overnight camping near Mumbai in a few different places tend to say this specific combination is the one they remember most clearly afterward.
Dinner happens around the fire or at the dining area depending on the night and the group. Maharashtrian meals, buffet, the kind of food that makes sense after a day of physical activity on the water. Big portions. People are genuinely hungry by dinner when the day started with rafting.
After dinner, depending on the group and the energy, there is a sing-along around the fire or just sitting there with nothing to do that requires attention. By 10 PM the river sounds take over and most people sleep better than they have in weeks. That last sentence is not an exaggeration. It comes up in reviews constantly.
A Perfectly Paced 2-Night Kolad Camping Itinerary
Kayaking on the calmer stretches of the Kundalika is available for people who want water time without the rapids. Burma Bridge, rappelling, zip-lining, nature treks through the riverine forest. A treasure hunt if the group is competitive. Indoor games when the weather decides to make a point about being monsoon season.
For a two night Kolad camping tripthe structure that works is:
- Day 1:Arrive in the afternoon, settle in, enjoy evening activities, relax by the bonfire and sleep.
- Day 2: Head out for early rafting, kayaking or other activities through the morning. Leave the afternoon free to relax and then gather around the second bonfire if the group wants it.
- Day 3: Leave after breakfast. That pace is not rushed and nobody comes home feeling like they needed more time.
How to Reach Kolad Camp from Mumbai and Pune
Night camping near Mumbai doesn’t get much closer than this. Three hours from Mumbai on NH66. Two and a half on a good day. The drive down the Konkan coast and through the ghat sections is honestly one of the better drives near Mumbai, particularly in monsoon when the hillsides are doing something worth looking at through the window.
The train option exists too. You can arrive at Kolad station on the Konkan Railway, about three and a half hours from CST. Take an auto or taxi from the station to the camp.
People Also Ask
What is camping in Kolad actually like at Nature Trails Kundalika?
Premium AC tents on a 22 acre riverside property, bonfire on the Kundalika riverbank, Grade II and III rafting from the camp itself, and Maharashtrian meals that are better than most camping food has any right to be. Three hours from Mumbai on NH66.
What are the best Kolad camping packages for an overnight stay?
Nature Trails Kundalika offers overnight packages with AC tent accommodation, rafting, kayaking, bonfire, and buffet meals included. Two night packages give the best experience without feeling rushed.
Is night camping near Mumbai at Kolad worth it?
If you book the right camp, yes. The combination of the Kundalika river at night, the bonfire on the bank, and the morning rafting session is the version of camping near Mumbai that people actually talk about when they get back.
Guest Reviews:
"Stayed at premium tents, location was excellent, rooms were new and clean. Food was excellent, very healthy, less oily. Staff was super friendly and cooperative. Nicely organised treasure hunt, campfire, sing along. Overall, pleasant stay, loved the simplicity."
"We friends went for this adventurous trip to Kolad with an overnight stay at Nature Trails. Went for river rafting on Sunday morning, it was a wonderful experience. Not to miss the river rafting when you are in Kolad or you will regret it for life."
